THE
ADVERBIAL OBJECT
In a sentence, an adverbial object tells you
something about the predicate. It answers questions such as:
Why?
Example: Vanwege de vogelpest
is dit gebied afgesloten.
(Due to birdflu this area has been closed down)
When?
Example:
De training begint om vijf uur.
(The training starts at five o’clock.)
For how long?
Example:
De wedstrijd zal een uur
duren.
(The match will last an hour.)
Whereto?
Wij gaan naar Frankrijk dit jaar.
(We’re going to France this year.)
Wherefrom?
De meeste druiven komen uit Frankrijk.
(Most grapes are from France.)
How?
De man heeft zijn hele leven heel hard gewerkt.
(The man has been working really hard all his life.)
And finally, with what?
De indiaan maakte
met een kleed rooksignalen.
(The Indian made smokesignals
with a rug.)
Not every sentence contains an adverbial object and some sentences
contain more than one adverbial object.
Sometimes adverbial objects are hard to find because you can’t ask
questions like where? When? Etc. However, if you parse a
sentence in the right way, you will automatically find its adverbial
object.
Examples:
1. Ik heb de
wedstrijd niet
gezien.
(I
did not see the match)
2. Zou Ajax
deze wedstrijd ook winnen?
(Would Ajax win this match
as well?)
3. Ik kan dat
wel begrijpen.
(I
can understand that.)
