PREPOSITIONAL OBJECT
 

A prepositional object always starts with a preposition.

Prepositional objects occur in sentences in which the predicate partly consists out of a verb + a preposition to go with that verb.

The preposition connects the prepositional object to the predicate.

Some examples:

1.     Ik twijfel aan deze methode. (twijfelen aan)
(I have my doubts about this method) – to have doubts about

2.     Ik ben niet tevreden met deze computer. (tevreden zijn met)
(I’m not at all content with this computer) – to be content with

3.     Ik luister niet graag naar hem. (luisteren naar)
(I don’t like listening to him) – to listen to

4.     Ik waarschuwde haar voor de gevolgen. (waarschuwen voor)
I warned her for the consequences. – to warn for

5.     Ik verlang al maanden naar haar . (verlangen naar)
( I have longed for her for months.) - To long for

Prepositional object or adverbial object?

The part of a sentence starting with a prepositional indicating a place, is in fact an adverbial object.

Examples:

1. Hij wacht op de brug.
    He’s waiting on the bridge. (on the bridge = adverbial object)

2. Zij wacht op haar vriendinnen. (op haar vriendinnen = voorzetselvoorwerp)
She’s waiting on her friends. (on her friends = prepositional object)
